Answers to Commonly Asked Questions on S&C’s Award Winning TripSaver™ Dropout Recloser — Part IV.
This article provides additional details on S&C’s TripSaver™ Dropout Recloser by answering commonly asked questions about this exciting new product. It is the fourth article in a four-part series.
Q. Can TripSaver be opened using a Loadbuster Tool?
A. Yes. TripSaver is designed to be opened using a Loadbuster Tool. The same application restrictions that apply to using the Loadbuster tool with a fuse cutout also apply to TripSaver.
Q. Can the Loadbuster Tool be used from a climbing position on the pole?
A. No. The large top cap on TripSaver makes it very difficult or impossible to see the Loadbuster Tool attachment hook on the opposite side. Thus, Loadbuster operation from a climbing position is not recommended. This operating restriction is noted in the TripSaver instruction sheet.
Q. Can a 15/25-kV TripSaver be used on a 34.5-kV system, line-to-ground?
A. No. TripSavers rated 15/25 kV are suitable for single-phase-to-neutral circuits only and can’t be applied on three-phase 25-kV or single-phase 34.5-kV systems. They can be applied at lower voltages however, such as on single-phase-to-neutral and three-phase 15-kV systems.
Q. Can a 15/25-kV TripSaver be applied in a 27-kV cutout mounting?
A. Yes. These models include an extension to the trunnion, which permits application in 27-kV mountings.
Q. Can TripSaver be used at system voltages below 15 kV nominal?
A. Yes. TripSavers can be applied at voltages down to 1 kV.
Q. Can TripSaver be left in the drop-open position?
A. Yes. TripSaver drops to a horizontal position, not upside-down like a fuse tube. TripSaver has watertight sealed joints but it is not completely sealed. It features a breather cap similar to that furnished on SMU-20 Fuse Units.
Q. What is the warranty for TripSaver?
A. TripSaver has S&C’s standard two-year warranty.
Q. Are TripSavers serially numbered?
A. Yes. Upon successful completion of final inspection, each TripSaver is assigned a unique serial number.
